Summary

edit
Description An inscription near the civic administration building in the Square reads: Te Marae-o-Hine: the Courtyard of the Daughter of Peace. This name was bestowed on the Square by local Maori, in the hope that people of all cultures in Palmerston North would live together in peace and harmony. This inscription is derived from a legendary maori woman called Te Rongorito. Her marae was tapu, dedicated to Rongo, God of peace and agriculture. Refugees from conflict were welcomed there, but Te Rongorito forbade war parties to pass through her weapons-free zone, a restriction that lasted for generations.
