In the mid-1940s, Canadians rarely used their cars for vacations. Gravel roads were rough, and paved roads were few and far between. But by the time the Trans-Canada Highway was officially opened in 1962, the country had doubled its paved roads. A new love affair with road trips blossomed. As automobile prices went down in the 1920s, more Canadians hit the open road. Having a car meant you were no longer restricted to train or boat schedules and their set destinations. It was just you, a map, and your sense of adventure.
