Beginning about 3200 BC a line of local kings from Upper Egypt began to extend their control northward. By the time of their descendant, King Narmer (C. 3100 BC), Upper and Lower Egypt has successfully been united. Narmer's reign saw the beginning of the Egyptian doctrine of the king who is god, the incarnation of the hawk-god Horus. This concept of the king as a god among mortals was central to ancient Egypt's political syatem for thousands of years and was expressed in the hieroglyphic writing of the king's name. |
