Cette peinture représente les images des six générations de patriarches du bouddhisme zen, dont le premier patriarche Bodhidharma, le deuxième patriarche Shenguang, le troisième patriarche Sengcan, le quatrième patriarche Daoxin, le cinquième patriarche Hongren et le sixième patriarche Huineng. Les figures des six patriarches sont reliées par des rochers, des sources, des pins et des cyprès anciens, et sont décorées de lieux saints bouddhistes. Elles sont censées démontrer pleinement la dignité du bouddhisme. Dans cette œuvre, six générations de patriarches sont placées côte à côte sur un même plan, séparées par des pins, des sources, etc., et les transitions sont naturelles. Les patriarches de chaque génération sont soigneusement représentés et avec des humeurs différentes. La signature sur l'écran est "Écrit par Jing'an du Lac de l'Ouest pour le profane de Pushun". Il y a quatre textes : de Zhu Yunming daté de la fin de la dynastie Ming, et sous la dynastie Qing, Tang Yin (le texte le plus long), Cao Xun et Cao Rong.
