Le Todai-ji ou Grand Temple de l'Est est un temple bouddhique situé à Nara et dont la construction a été décidée par l'Empereur Shomu en 743 et réalisée entre 745 et 752 avec des moyens considérables pour l'époque. Le temple a été reconstruit deux fois aux XIIè et XVIè siècles.

Très influencé par la Chine de la dynastie Tang, l'Empereur Shomu s'est efforcé de renforcer l'unité du Japon en centralisant le pouvoir autour de la cour impériale au détriment des clans féodaux et en s'appuyant sur le bouddhisme.

Dans ce but, il a fait construire de nombreux temples et monastères bouddhiques dans tout le pays dépendant du Todai-ji, centre spirituel de la nouvelle capitale Nara avec un symbole fort : le Grand Bouddha Vairocana (Daibutsu en japonais).
