| Description | Daintree Cliffs, Werribee Gorge State Park, Victoria Australia. During the Devonian Period 370–380 million years ago the Ordovician Period marine sediments of Werribee Gorge were compressed, buckled, folded, and lifted above sea level. This major anticline is Ordovician slate and shale folded about 370 million years ago. Above the anticline is Permian sandstone. Between the Ordovician and Permian layers many millions of years of sediment have been eroded away. Missing periods of geological history are called an ‘unconformity’. Source: Parks Victoria |
