DescriptionDalbeth Cemetery, Polish Section - geograph.org.uk - 601331.jpg |
English: Dalbeth Cemetery, Polish Section This is just one of the many typical gravestones within the Polish section at Dalbeth. It may seem unusual to have different family names on the same lair, however the mother and son actually have the SAME surname, but there is a male and female variant. Any male Polish surname ending in 'I', has a female equivalent ending in 'A'. So whilst the wife still takes her husband's surname on marriage, she uses the female equivalent. This means it is always possible to tell the gender of the person you may be contacting, whether the prefix of Mr, Ms, Miss or Mrs is known or not! |
