English: Dale House and Cottage, Humshaugh. Keys to the Past Web Site
This pair of houses were built in the 17th century and altered in the 19th and later 20th centuries. Dale House is the larger building and was built as a bastle, probably in the early 17th century. Although it was completely rebuilt in 1667 it still has some typical bastle features, including its central byre doorway in the east wall and large quoin stones at the south-east corner. A datestone over the doorway records the initials TD and MD and the date 1667. Dale Cottage was built a little later in the 17th century and was also a bastle. Here, the south wall and east gable date from this time, but the cottage has also been remodelled, probably in the later 18th century |
