Summary
editDescriptionDam, Loch Eilde Mor - geograph.org.uk - 18153.jpg |
English: Dam, Loch Eilde Mor. Loch Eilde Mor is a natural loch, but it has been slightly enlarged by this small dam. The higher water level allows water to be fed into a pipeline to help fill the Blackwater Reservoir and power the old aluminium smelter in Kinlochleven. This loch at 350m above a fjord head is an obvious target for further hydroelectric development. Tapping the water of the Mamores, and Glen Nevis hills was the next project for the Hydro board, after Glen Strathfarrar, but by then the hydroelectric project was being wound down, environmental protests and a Conservative government unhappy with big nationalised engineering projects saw the Nevis scheme halted. A more modest upgrade of Blackwater's facilities may not be so contentious. |
