La historia de las falsificaciones imitando las esculturas halladas en el Cerro de los Santos tiene un protagonista indiscutible: Vicente Juan y Amat, también conocido como "el relojero de Yecla". Tras los hallazgos oficiales realizados en 1860, Vicente Juan y Amat fue el primero en realizar excavaciones en el yacimiento del Cerro de los Santos, informando de los hallazgos al Padre Carlos Lasalde, perteneciente a los Padres Escolapios de Yecla, quien sería el encargado de continuar con las excavaciones en el Cerro y de reunir una importante colección de esculturas, de las cuales algunas ingresaron en el Museo Arqueológico Nacional, formando hoy en día parte de su colección permanente. La colección de esculturas que Vicente Juan y Amat obtuvo de su excavación fueron vendidas al Museo Arqueológico Nacional en 1872. Posteriormente y hasta el año 1885, fue vendiendo al Museo, diversos lotes que debía obtener a través de compras a diferentes vecinos de la zona que guardaban esculturas en sus casas. Lo más característico de esta "colección" es que además de las piezas originales, hay un lote de piezas manifiestamente falsas, y otro lote que podemos considerar "retocadas", es decir, esculturas auténticas a las que se añaden distintos elementos falsos: soles, estrellas, inscripciones. En la actualidad se piensa que Amat no fue el autor material de las esculturas falsas pero sí el encargado de comprarlas y venderlas posteriormente al Museo. Museo Arqueologico Nacional Madrid |
