Jhdt. daraus eine Johannes dem Täufer geweihte Kirche. 636 erfolgte die muslimische Eroberung von Damaskus. 715 war die Moschee beauftragt vom Omayadenkalifen Al-Walid fertiggestellt, vom reichen Mosaikenschmuck ist nach Bränden wenig übrig. Die drei Minarette sind unterschiedlich: altes Brautminarett, mamlukisches al-Gharbiyya Minarett und niederes Jesus Minarett. |
