Description |
Im 2 Jhdt. wurde der semitische Hadad Tempel zum Jupiter Tempel erweitert, im 4. Jhdt. daraus eine Johannes dem Täufer geweihte Kirche. 636 erfolgte die muslimische Eroberung von Damaskus. 715 war die Moschee beauftragt vom Omayadenkalifen Al-Walid fertiggestellt, vom reichen Mosaikenschmuck ist nach Bränden wenig übrig. Die drei Minarette sind unterschiedlich: altes Brautminarett, mamlukisches al-Gharbiyya Minarett und niederes Jesus Minarett. |
