English: On August 17, 2021, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a stunning true-color image of the green Danube River Delta—the spot where, it has been said, “the Danube kisses the Black Sea”. Also sometimes called the “Everglades” of Europe, the Danube Delta is the largest European wetland and reed bed and is made up of a myriad of channels, lakes and rivers. The Danube Delta is home to more than 300 species of bird and 45 species of freshwater fish.
The Danube River is the second-largest river in Europe, coursing about 2,860 km (1,777 miles) from the Black Forest (Germany) to the Black Sea (along the Ukraine/Romania border. In this image, the Danube can be seen flowing northward through Romania, then turning to the east towards the Black Sea. The city of Tulcea sits close to the place where the dark green triangle begins to form. Close to Tulcea, the Danube splits into three branches: the Kiliya (Chilia) branch in the north, which forms the border between Ukraine and Romania; the Sulina Branch in the middle; and the Sfântu Gheorghe (Saint George) branch in the south. Over time, the shifting courses of these branches and the amount of sediment they carry has changed the shape of the Danube Delta. |
