English: The Danube Delta, formed where the Danube River meets the Black Sea, is the largest river delta wetland in Europe. While the Danube River watershed drains about 309,477 square miles (801,463 square kilometers) across 19 countries, the Danube River itself courses through 10 different countries, before it ends in a labyrinthine network of channels, lakes, marshes, islands and floodplains. The expansive green delta forms a valuable natural buffer zone, where sediment and pollutants settle before the water enters the Black Sea. The complex ecosystem of the Danube Delta, sometimes called the “Everglades of Europe”, is also richly biodiverse, creating a home for more than 300 species of bird and 45 species of freshwater fish.
On August 17, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Danube Delta. The Danube River forms the border between Ukraine and Romania as it flows southward then turns east towards the Delta. In this image, Ukraine is in the northeast and Romania sits in the west and south. |
