Description
English: Darmstädter und Nationalbank KGaA (DANAT-Bank) stock certificate for 100 Reichsmark, issued in October 1928 in Berlin. Founded in 1922, in 1923, the institute acquired a participation in the Danzig Bank for Trade and Commerce, founded the Internationale Bank te Amsterdam in 1924 and acquired the long-established Hamburg Bankhaus Joh. Berenberg-Gossler & Co in 1931. Generous dividends of 10-12% made shareholders feel secure. Then came the shock on 13 July 1931: "After extraordinarily strong, constantly increasing credit cancellations, first on the part of our international creditors, then on the part of our domestic creditors, we see ourselves forced to close our counters temporarily for the protection of all our creditors. The DANAT-Bank had gone too far in granting loans during the global economic crisis. When one of its major clients, the infamous NORDWOLLE Group in Bremen, fell, the bank was taken down with it. The collapse of the DANAT-Bank was the crystallisation point of enormous economic turbulence in the Weimar Republic, which, with the resulting misery of broad segments of the population, ultimately led to Hitler's coming to power. DANAT-Bank was finally merged with Dresdner Bank in 1932 as part of a reconstruction plan for Dresdner Bank drawn up in agreement with the government of the Germany when the banking crisis was cleared up.
