Description

This crossing of the River Thames, to the east of London consists of two tunnels and the cable-stayed Queen Elizabeth II Bridge.

The first tunnel opened in 1963, the second in 1980 and the bridge in 1981 each time to cope with increasing traffic.

They all carry a heavy volume of traffic as a vital link as part of the M25 London orbital road.

The photo was taken from 8-10 miles (~15 km) away. Early evening sunlight casts a warm colour on some buildings, including a cluster of oil tanks.
