Police officers and members of the public have been honoured for acts of bravery and selflessness in the annual West Midlands Police awards ceremony. More than 30 accolades were presented at the event on Wednesday night (Sept 19) in recognition of outstanding contributions to tackling crime, life-saving first aid, and heroic interventions from members of the public. An eight-year-old school girl has been named West Midlands Police's Young Person of the Year after her starring role in a hard-hitting road safety DVD. Alexandra Tolley – a pupil at Newfield Primary School in Halesowen – planned and filmed the public awareness film to highlight traffic concerns outside schools including illegal parking, speeding and driving whilst using a mobile phone. It shows the consequences of law-breaking motorists with Alex playing the role of a car crash victim hit by a speeding driver. Dudley Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Stuart Johnson, said: "This was an excellent project for the local Neighbourhood Police Team to work on with students. Road safety is often raised at our community meetings the DVD pulls no punches and will leave a lasting impression on viewers. "Alex did an excellent job of making this scenario look realistic and through the DVD she has championed road safety and highlighted concerns to pupils, parents and motorists. I thank her for her passionate involvement." The DVD – which was produced along with students from Halesowen College – is also being shown to parents and offending drivers to raise their awareness on the risks of speeding and inconsiderate parking. Alexandra picked up the West Midlands Police Authority Young Person of the Year award at the annual West Midlands Police Awards Ceremony. |
