| Description |
Statue of Ptolemaic King (Acc. 9109) This artifact is displayed in the second new gallery, 'Egyptian Worlds', This gallery takes visitors on a journey through the landscape, customs and practices of the ancient Egyptians. The new displays are designed to bring this key period and place to life in a dramatic and thought-provoking way. This is the limestone head from the statue of a king, wearing the royal nemes head-dress. It is broken off at the neck and there is damage to nose and uraeus (royal cobra). It measures approx. 14cm. The statue probably represents either one of the last Egyptian pharaohs (Dynasties 28-30) or an early Ptolemaic king, perhaps Ptolemy I Soter. It was discovered in an excavation at the Upper Egyptian site of Armant (about 12 miles south of Thebes), and donated to the museum by the Egypt Exploration Society in 1930-31. |
