Congs zijn rituele voorwerpen, meestal van jade, gevonden in graven in China en Japan. Mijn congs zijn ontstaan na een grote reis door Japan in 2007, samen met mijn zoon. De echo van de onwaarschijnlijke hout-architectuur in dat land, de overal en steeds aanwezige aandacht en de wonderschone tuinen duurt voort. Het maken van de Congs gaat als vanzelf. Er is geen vooropgezet plan of idee; in het maken worden de volgende handelingen zichtbaar als reactie op wat er zojuist gebeurd is. De Congs zijn derhalve niet gemaakt, ze zijn ontstaan. Soms worden er tekeningetjes gemaakt, omdat er meer te zien is, dan er te zien is. Het lijkt alsof er een verborgen betekenis onder de uiterlijke vorm schuift, maar er is niet naar gestreefd deze betekenis duidelijk te laten zien, of er speciaal de nadruk op te leggen. Het is eerder een ‘overlopen‘ zoals een bron dat doet, zonder bedoeling, zonder de vraag waar het water naar toe moet, of waar het blijft. Het gaat niet om wat er staat; het gaat over wat het oproept. De Congs zijn niet te bedenken. Ze waren er al voordat er werd begonnen. Het gaat om dat wat er bijna is, in het gebied te brengen van het bewuste. Om het te kunnen ervaren, want dat gaat aan het bewustzijn vooraf. Onverwacht gebeurd dat soms, onaangekondigd, niet voorspelbaar, niet te regelen. De techniek is dan niet meer waar te nemen. Soms gebeurd het dat wat te ervaren is op weg is geholpen door wat er te zien is. Ineens kan zich in een Cong iets vrijmaken, en weg zijn alle zintuigen, het bewustzijn en het ervaren.
