Summary edit

Description

Built as a B.35 bomber, TA719 was later converted to a TT.35 target tug and flew with No3 Civil Anti-Aircraft Cooperation Unit at Exeter between 1954 and 1963. She then became G-ASKC with the Skyfame collection at Staverton but was immediately involved in filming the movie ‘633 squadron’ at Bovingdon. After this she returned to Skyfame and flew at displays until badly damaged in a landing accident at Staverton in July 1964. She again became a movie ‘star’ in 1968 when used in a ground crash scene for ‘Mosquito Squadron’. A long term restoration was then commenced back at Staverton. In 1978 she moved to Duxford, together with several other Skyfame aircraft, and the restoration continued. The badly damaged wing was rebuilt to a very high standard, to the extent that once complete, the distance from wingtip to fintip was exactly the same for each wing. With all the woodwork suitable restored and repaired over many years, it always seemed rather a shame that less effort went into the metal work, with fake cowlings and props being fitted. The interior was also, I believe, left unfinished. In this ‘lightened’ state, she was a good candidate for hanging up in the new ‘AirSpace’ hangar exhibition, and before this happened she was repainted into her original 3CAACU colour scheme. While historically accurate and making her different and attractive exhibit, it doesn’t seem to truly represent the Mosquito as a fighting machine, in my opinion. She remains on display suspended in the ‘AirSpace’ hangar at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK.
