Summary edit

Description
English: Debre Selam Medhane Alem Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, 700 Tonawanda Street, Buffalo, New York, December 2020. The relative simplicity of the church's detailing points to a vernacular architecture of the type that would have been more common a half-century or so before its actual date of construction (1927), but the oddly angular pointed arches above the windows and the stepped buttresses that figure repeatedly into both the façade and the lateral elevations introduce modest but far more temporally appropriate Late Gothic Revival influences. The octagonal cupola atop the central tower is a recent addition, replacing a blunt spire with an eight-pointed footprint and unusual concave sides. The West Side Hungarian Reformed Church was founded in 1926, split off from the Magyar Reformed Church on Clinton Street in the wake of the Buffalo Hungarian community's gradual migration into the Riverside area, and set to work almost immediately constructing the edifice seen here. The congregation continued meeting in the building until 2012, when upon its dissolution the building was sold to its current owner, Western New York's sole house of worship for those of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido faith.
