doctor of the outfit was killed early in the day; Colonel Forsythwas dangerously wounded in three places. Before 10 oclock a bullet piercedhis right thigh; later another shattered his left leg at the knee, and in the afternoona third one grazed his skull, scooping the bone. Wearing moc-casins they had made from boot-tops and with blankets wrapped around them Indianfashion, they managed to crawl through the lines of the hostiles in the first night, making three miles. The next day they spent like thefirst, lying concealed under the river bank; the Indians swarmed all around them, and it was a wonder to themselves that the wily savages failed to discover them.During the third day they were lying in a bison swallow when some scouting Indianscame within thirty yards of their cover and Stillwell had to quiet an alarming rattle-snake by spitting tobacco juice
