Description
English: Crew members on board the U.S. Navy's nuclear fast-attack submarine USS Pogy (SSN 647) sport traditional Blue Noses as they return to their home port of San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 26, 1996. The Pogy and her crew spent 50 days underneath the Arctic ice cap during a 93-day deployment called Scientific Exercise '96. Seven scientists and technical advisors conducted experiments and collected samples for studies in water mass properties, geophysics, ice mechanics and pollution detection in the Arctic Ocean. The research voyage was the second of five planned deployments through the year 2000.
