English: "(a) Map highlighting deforestation and fire activity between 2012 and 2021, a period when environmental governance began to weaken again, as indicated by increasing rates of annual deforestation in (b). In (b), annual deforestation rates for the entire Amazon biome were adapted with permission from Smith et al. (Smith, C. C. et al. Old-growth forest loss and secondary forest recovery across Amazonian countries. Environ. Res. Lett. 16, 085009 (2021).)." This study has been featured in 2024 in science.
