Summary edit

Description
English: A view of the surviving ruins of the Deir el-Medina workman's village at Thebes, Upper Egypt. It housed a community of professional architects, masons, painters and decorators who were kept segregated from the rest of the population for generations, in a effort to keep the whereabouts of the treasure-filled royal tombs a secret during the New Kingdom. Deir el-Medina was abandoned after the end of Egypt's New Kingdom but many invaluable papyri and ostracas have been found intact here which describe the workmen's daily tasks.
