Description
English: It is said that the famous robber of that time, Chite founded this temple. After his death the idol remained in the midst of the jungle. Manohar Ghosh constructed the present temple and reinstalled the deity in 1610 AD, 80years before Job Charnock landed in Calcutta. However differences of opinion are there about is foundation year as 1586, 1582, and 1610 mentioned in three different places. The idol of Chitteswari Durga is installed in the sanctum. The deity built by Chite with Neem (Margosa) wood remains the same and the idol is one of the oldest exhibit of sculpture.
