Summary edit
DescriptionDere Street Milestone West Woodburn Northumberland.jpg |
English: Uninscribed (anepigraphic) Roman milestone next to a Bronze Age round cairn, at 580 m north of Woodhouse, situated just off a Roman road named Dere Street, seen in the background, on north of West Woodburn. The milestone, 2 m high, erected on the edge of a tumulus (9 m in diameter by up to 0.6 m high - partially excavated at unknown date and unpublished), is included in the scheduling of the archaeological site. This possible miliaria is said to have come originally from the Roman bridge which carried Dere Street across the Rede (or a tributary ?), near the Habitancum Roman fort. Paving of the bridge was noted in the river bed in the XIXe century, but this has since been removed and there is now no trace of the crossing. The milestone was moved to a local farm and incorporated into a building and subsequently was erected in its present position in 1971 by The Redesdale Society. See Roman milestone and bridge bibliogr. and more pictures of the tumulus |
