Notes |
English: The bearded, thirty-year-old sitter is identified by the letter in his left hand: Derick Berck from Cologne, a merchant of the Steelyard (Stahlhof) in London.
According to Holbein's biographer Derek Wilson: "The striking similarity with Titian's Gentleman in Blue (1511) has often been commented on and Holbein must have based his composition on that of the Venetian master". (Wilson, p. 184.)
