Description

Limestones in the Mississippian of Utah, USA.

This outcrop is on the northern flanks of the Uinta Mountains, a range in the Middle Rockies (Central Rockies) of northeastern Utah. These mountains formed during the Laramide Orogeny in the Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary. The rocks are structurally-tilted marine limestone beds of the Deseret Limestone.

The light-colored, scree-covered slope conceals the Uinta Fault Zone - the Deseret Limestone is in fault contact with upper Precambrian sedimentary rocks (= very dark red rocks at far-left).

Stratigraphy: Deseret Limestone (= Madison Limestone, sensu lato), Osagean Stage, upper Lower Mississippian

Locality: Sheep Creek Canyon (view from Forest Service Road 218/Route 1370), west of Route 44 & south-southwest of the town of Manila, Ashley National Forest, northern flanks of the eastern Uinta Mountains, northeastern Utah, USA
