Description

In October of 1869 Te Porere Redoubt served as the site of the last major battle of the New Zealand Wars. The encounter was fought between Te Kooti and his supporters, and Crown forces, which included loyal Māori. This sketch, drawn by Thomas McDonnell, documents aspects of the conflict, noting that the redoubt was “taken by storm on the 4th Oct. 1869 by Native Allies and Europeans”. It shows geographical features and the redoubt's layout, and the position of many government fighters wounded or killed. The route of Te Kooti’s retreat towards the bush is also highlighted.

The archived drawing is contained within a despatch from Lieutenant Colonel McDonnell reporting on the “successful engagement with Te Kooti”. Both letter and drawing were transferred to Archives New Zealand from the Army Department, and used as source material in Judith Binney’s, Redemption Songs: A life of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki.
