Description
English: After the formation of the Isthmus of Panama, the Caribbean Sea became a closed sea, generating the Gulf Stream with few tidal movements and few nutrients, and it also generated warmer temperatures in northern Europe. As a result, the sea became hotter and saltier, ideal for creating coral reefs. The Pacific Ocean, on the other hand, was more complex as it was colder, since the trade winds cross Panama, on the Pacific side, pushing the surface waters to the west, causing the cold water, rich in nutrients, to rise from the bottom to the surface. These nutrients, along with energy from the sun, trigger a massive plankton bloom that supplies millions of anchovies that then generate a feeding frenzy for seabirds, tuna, rays, whales, and sharks. It is also less salty, and contains few coral reefs.
