| Description |
Français : détecteur à cristal
English: A cat's whisker detector, an antique electronic component used in crystal radio receivers from about 1906 to the 1940s. It consists of a mineral crystal, probably galena or silicon, embedded in solder in the metal cup at bottom. A fine wire attached to the adjustable mounting tab at top touches the surface of the crystal, forming a crude semiconductor diode. The function of this device in a crystal radio was to rectify the radio signal from the antenna, extracting the audio modulation signal from the carrier wave. |
