English: Illustrations from an edition of Deutsche Uniformen ("German uniforms") printed in the 1930s, after 1938, a booklet with colour plates and charts of military and paramilitary uniforms and insignia of Nazi Germany, published by Verlag Moritz Ruhl in Leipzig:
  • Plate 15 – Uniform and Rank Insignia of the Reich Labour Service (German: Uniform und Rangabzeichen des RAD)
    • Service dress. An earth brown paramilitary RAD uniform was implemented in 1934; beside the swastika brassard, the RAD symbol, an arm badge in the shape of an upward pointing shovel blade, was displayed on the upper left shoulder of all uniforms and great-coats worn by all personnel.
    • Tuchmütze, peaked cloth service cap (althochdeutsch Spessartmütze, "Robin Hood cap")
    • Collar tabs/gorget patches (Kragenpatten/Kragenspiegel)
    • Shoulder boards/straps (Achselstücke/Schulterklappen)
    • RAD cap emblem (Mützenabzeichen)
    • RAD spade emblem on upper left sleeve showing unit number etc.
See Reichsarbeitsdienst Uniformen (www.wwiidaybyday.com) and Freiwilliger Arbeitsdienst (FAD)/Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) Regulation Collar Tabs and Shoulder Boards (www.germandaggers.com): The Freiwilliger Arbeitsdienst was a voluntary organisation established in 1931 as an agency to help mitigate the effects of mass unemployment on German economy, militarise the workforce, and indoctrinate it with Nazi ideology. It was renamed Reichsarbeitsdienst in 1934. For most of the RAD ranks, each collar tab can to worn by 2 or 3 grades. The individual grades are identified by the shoulder strap. Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) arm badges displaying an emblem of a shovel blade were worn by all personnel and idenified the unit or school assignment of the individual. All badges were BeVo woven and worn on the left upper sleeve.
