Description
English: President Theodore Roosevelt made Devils Tower the very first American national monument on September 24, 1906. It is a magnificent natural monolith that inspires awe. It is also part of the Black Hills Mountain Range. The view changes as you circle the monument, from verdant trees to the blackened remnants of the prescribed fires in the spring and fall, various birds, beautiful flowers, and breathtaking vistas.

It is sacred to numerous Native American tribes who have lived in the area from beyond memory. One legend says that Devils Tower was created when six Sioux girls were picking flowers in the forest when they were chased by bears. The Great Spirit lifted up the ground beneath the girls to save their lives. The bears tried but were unable to climb the rock, leaving deep scratch marks along the sides of the Tower.

the site grew enormous attention when it was featured in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
