Description |
Nederlands: Zilverkleurig blikken kastje met trapeziumvormige doorsnede en holle voet. Alle wanden zijn van glas behalve de achterwand. Temidden van de in felle kleuren beschilderde bloemversieringen is een gipsen beeldje van de H.Maagd van Guadelupe geplaatst. Al het blik is rijekleijk versierd met gedreven bloemmotieven en meanders.
Het kastje kan in huis neergezet worden ter verering en bescherming. De donker getinte H.Maagd van Guadelupe is de meest vereerde heilige van Mexico en patrones van de Amerikas. Zij is de rooms-katholieke vervangster van de Azteekse aardgodin Tonantzin. De Maagd verscheen voor het eerst op 9 december 1531 aan de pas bekeerde Indiaan Juan Diego. Op 12 december vertoonde zich op Juan's cape, als bewijs voor de kerkelijke overheid, haar beeltenis staande op een maansikkel en omgeven door gouden stralen. Deze cape wordt sindsdien als relikwie vereerd. Haar nationale feestdag is 12 december en op die dag komen tienduizenden gelovigen naar de baseliek in Mexico City om haar eer te bewijzen. Vaak leggen zij het laatste gedeelte van de weg naar de kerk op hun knieën af. In 1970 besloot men tegenover de oude baseliek, die steeds dieper begon weg te zakken, een nieuwe hypermoderne kerk te bouwen, die in 1976 werd ingewijd (Toor, 1947: 172-178 en Cottrell en Sund: 150-153).
