Looking WNW (downstream) from bascule bridge into "dewatered" 1200x110 foot main lock at McAlpine Locks.
Before this lock was completed in 1961, the main lock at McAlpine was a 600x110 foot lock completed in 1921. The short length of that lock required large tows to be broken into 2 parts which were locked through separately and then reassembled before proceeding, a time-consuming process. The 1921 lock was replaced by another 1200x110 foot lock completed in 2009.
In foreground is part of emergency gate which closes upper end of lock while work is done on upper miter gates. At right is elevator temporarily attached to lock wall.
There are two groups of 12 slots in the lock floor. The slots near the middle of the lock allow water to flow into the lock; the slots near the downstream end allow water to drain out. In one of the slots is a pump with a tall discharge pipe.
The lock has a nominal lift of 37 feet, whch is the difference between the "normal" water level above the dam (420 feet above sea level, or 12 feet on the upper gauge) and the "normal" level below the dam (383 feet above sea level, or 9 feet on the lower gauge). However, the level below the dam is usually higher than "normal", so the actual lift is usually less than 37 feet.
K&I Bridge can be seen in distance.
