This is part of the widespread Duluth Complex, a ~1.1 billion year old suite of igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota that is associated with volcanism in the Lake Superior segment of the ancient Mid-Continent Rift System. These grayish-colored rocks on the left are gabbroic anorthosite to anorthositic gabbro, which are mafic, phaneritic (coarsely-crystalline), intrusive igneous rocks dominated calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar - CaAl2Si2O8 - calcium aluminosilicate. The rocks on the right are part of a large, mafic igneous dike that intruded the anorthosites. The dike-anorthosite intrusive contact is subvertical below the handle of the geology hammer. Dikes are planar igneous intrusions that cut across country rocks. As such, they postdate the host rocks. This igneous dike is composed of diabase (microgabbro) - a more thorough lithologic designation is ophitic olivine tholeiite.
