Dianthus Parasitica? Sagarlia: Calliactis parasitica: parasitic anemone
Description
This paper collage by PH Gosse was probably used as a teaching aid. This species of anemone is usually found attached to the shells of hermit crabs. Although its name suggests a parasitic relationship, both animals actually benefit: the crab is protected from predators by the anemone’s stinging tentacles and the anemone will receive food scraps as the crab feeds. This work is very similar to plate 4 of Gosse’s book ‘The aquarium: an unveiling of the wonders of the deep sea’.
