| Description | Native warm-season perennial tufted C4 grass; stems are to 120 cm tall and nodes have a prominent ring of hairs. Flowerheads are digitate with 2-4 erect 4-7 cm long branches (racemes) pressed together. Spikelets occur to the base of the branches and are densely hairy and paired; lower spikelet is unstalked, 3-4.5 mm long and awned, upper spikelet stalked and unawned. Flowers from late spring to autumn, but mostly in early summer. Occurs on a wide range of soil types, but particularly on heavier textured more fertile soils that have good moisture holding capacity (e.g. black clays). Most common on the North Western Slopes and Upper Hunter. Native biodiversity. An indicator of pastures in good condition on heavy soils. Livestock tend to pull plant out on sandy soils. Not particularly drought tolerant and is frost and shade sensitive. Plants live about 3-4 years and establishes readily from seed. Highly palatable to cattle (more so than sheep) and provides early warm season feed and good feed quality when green. The slender stems are more digestible than coarser grasses such as Red Grass. Declines under heavy or uncontrolled grazing. Best suited strategic grazing incorporating regular rests. Responds to additions of nitrogen, phosphorus and small amounts of sulphur. |
