Description My favorite home in the subdivision that popped up during the 1940s on what was formerly a farm field just across Scott’s Creek from Downtown Sylva, North Carolina is this humble cottage, which stands at the intersection of Josephine Street and Dillsboro Road. Constructed in 1950, the simple, yet elegant house was executed in the style of the modernist movement, with a large, multi-pane picture window, tan crabstone cladding on the front facade, and a simple, unornamented facade. Houses like this one popped up across the United States following the Second World War, taking advantage of a housing shortage brought on by more than two decades of very little new construction. Many houses of the era have been heavily modified and no longer retain many of their original features, but this house retains its original, simple massing, front windows, and other details that have, at this point, more often than not been altered or replaced with new elements. Though it hasn’t been heavily modified at this period in time, and retains an appearance that makes me think of the simple houses of Europe and Scandinavia in particular, it does not have any sort of covenant on it, and could easily get flipped or heavily renovated with no regard to the integrity of its appearance. It would be nice to see progress pass this house by, but, being as close as it is to the center of town, I doubt that will be the case.
