| Description | This old farmhouse sits along Dillsboro Road in my hometown of Sylva, North Carolina. Though it has a construction date recorded as being 1925, like the houses on Allen Street, I do have some doubts about this date, as the house was built in a simple variant of the Carpenter Gothic/Folk Victorian Style, which would make a date from around the turn of the 20th Century or perhaps a bit earlier more likely, though the wraparound porch does appear to be more in line with the date given as to the construction. The house is one of two old wood-frame farmhouses along Dillsboro Road, which was the original roadway between Sylva and Dillsboro before the construction of US 23 Business in the 1920s and 1930s. The area, which once was home to farm fields, was subdivided in the 1940s to create a neighborhood that today is full of cottages and ranch houses from the 1940s and 1950s. This farmhouse is one of the more notable historic structures in the town, and is a rare well-kept example of this particular style in this area, and is conveniently located in close proximity to the center of town. |
