Царевич родился 30 мая 1661 года и был крещен в честь Феодора Стратилата, раннехристианского воина-мученика, пострадавшего в 319 году. После смерти Федора Алексеевича в 1682 году икона была перенесена в Архангельский собор Московского Кремля и установлена над гробницей царя. Иконография восходит к традиционному для царских мерных образов изводу, известному с середины XVI века и предполагавшему совмещение на одной доске образа Святой Троицы в верхней части иконы и прямоличного изображения патронального святого в рост. Произведение находится под записью XVIII–XIX веков, об авторской живописи позволяют судить лишь небольшие фрагменты, одним из

которых является клеймо с изображением Святой Троицы.
