Português: Inicialmente considerada obra de Gregório Lopes (Santos, 1950), Martin Soria irá fazer a sua atribuição a um pintor que fica conhecido como Mestre de São Quintino, discípulo de Gregório Lopes (Soria, 1957). Através dos estudos de Joaquim Oliveira Caetano (Caetano, 1988-93; 1993) o Mestre de São Quintino é identificado como Diogo de Contreiras, que terá pintado este painel para o retábulo da capela-mor da igreja do mosteiro de São Bento de Cástris (Évora), em 1546. Desse retábulo faria também parte o "Martírio das Onze Mil Virgens", que se guarda no Museu da Sé de Évora. Após a extinção do Mosteiro de São Bento, a pintura dará entrada na colecção da Biblioteca Pública de Évora a qual, a 1 de março de 1915, é transferida para o Museu de Évora. De referir ainda que, para além das intervenções de restauto referidas no campo respectivo desta ficha de inventário, a pintura sofreu um restauro anterior, em 1952, nas oficinas de restauro do Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, tendo sido apresentada na 5ª Conferência de Restauro de Pinturas
