| Description |
English: Dismantled Bridge near Leiston and Aldeburgh The old bridge with its decking removed. The line to Aldeburgh was built by the East Suffolk Railway Company in the early 1860s. It was an 8.5 mile branch connecting with the East Suffolk Railway line from Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft to Ipswich. It Joined this line at Saxmundham.
After Diesel Multiple units were unable to reduce costs enough to save the branch it was Axed at Leiston in 1966. The remaining freight stub was used to build Sizewell Nuclear power station and now is used to take away nuclear fuel to Sellafield. This is done by Direct Rail Services (owned by Nuclear fuels) and is the last nationalised rail company. |
