Title
English: Display case with posters for National Thrift Week at Rhodes Brothers Ten Cent Store, Seattle, ca. 1920
Description
English: Begun in 1919 and observed every year up through the 1960s, National Thrift Week was a nationwide campaign of responsible consumerism. It was organized primarily by community groups, government agencies, professional organizations, and financial institutions, as well as local stores. The week always began on or around the January 17th birthday of Benjamin Franklin.
This photograph shows a Rhodes Brothers Ten Cent Store window decorated with flyers advertising National Thrift Week. The signs promote the values of thrift, saving, security and benevolence. On one poster, the timeless advice to "spend less than you earn" is paired with a quote from Benjamin Franklin: "When the well is dry we know the worth of water."
