Description
English: Distance marker on the city walls - ¾ Mile. This stone, inserted into the city walls opposite the Queen's School, indicates the distance of ¾ Mile from the Eastgate. In the 18th century the city walls were substantially repaired and made into a promenade around the city, and there are many dates carved into the walls indicating when each section was rebuilt. Although this stone is not dated it seems likely that it was inserted around that time. So far I have found four stones - '¼ Mile' near the Phoenix Tower 632899, this stone '¾ Mile' at the top of the steps to the Queen's School sports ground (and behind the lamp post), '1 Mile' above the so-called 'Roman Quay' and the Roodee 657713, and '1 Mile ½' between the Old Dee Bridge and the Recorder's Steps 665269. The stones are all worn and the inscriptions tend to be almost invisible without the sun at the right angle and can be easily missed. See this '¾ Mile' stone in position 657732
