Summary
editDescriptionDisused Chopwell and Garesfield Railway, Chopwell Wood - geograph.org.uk - 761059.jpg |
English: Disused Chopwell and Garesfield Railway, Chopwell Wood. The Chopwell and Garesfield Railway was opened in 1894 - the last mineral railway to be opened in the Durham coalfield - and provided a direct link from the mines at Chopwell to the coal staithes on the River Tyne. The railway was closed in 1961. Part of Chopwell Wood was felled and the trees were cleared to create the coal working area and the mineral line. Following the closure of the colliery the coal working area was used for housing and open grassed parkland. The rail line was lifted and is now a popular route through the wood for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. |
