Summary edit

Description
English: Disused Mourne quarry railway (1of4). The Mournes have long been a source of granite. Newcastle harbour 24181 was built to service the exported material. This sequence, of four photographs, was taken more than 36 years ago and shows the remains of the railway and rolling stock used to bring the product down. I have not been back since and don't know how much still remains. The current 1:25,000 map shows the old quarry on Chimney Rock mountain but nothing else. I have had some assistance from another member and used the 1966 edition of the one-inch map (Sheet 9 - South Down) to help in approximate positioning. If I am wrong please let me know. A short stretch of railway which ends in the centre of the photo but its course is clearly visible as it continues to the quarry. Continue to 1108769. See also the "Discussion" box (left).
