Description Front cover illustration to The Hunting of the Snark by Henry Holiday (1876) and Queen Elizabeth I ('The Ditchley portrait') by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. In his The Illuminated Snark (2004), John Tufail discovered that the clouds in the night sky (Henry Holiday's book cover illustration for the Snark) depict a map. That helped me to find the Ditchley Portrait (Queen Elizabeth I standing on a map drawn by Marcus Gheeraerts the younger, ca. 1592). The whole composition of Holiday's picture is based on the Ditchley portrait (see also the sail and the rigging in Holiday's illustration). See also FatherTime FromElizabeth1AtOldAge 1610.jpg.
