Description
English: Ditchley Gate, Blenheim Park On the B4437 road to Charlbury, Ditchley Gate is the northern end of a two-mile axis which runs through the Column of Victory 44821, the Grand Bridge 31556 and Blenheim Palace 29975. This was intended as the formal entrance to Blenheim Palace, although the route from Woodstock was and is more commonly used. Nicholas Hawksmoor, who along with John Vanbrugh is credited for designing Blenheim Palace, produced a plan for this gate, but it was not used: Pevsner attributes what was built in 1781 to John Yenn. Although this is not obvious, Ditchley Gate is the start of a right of way across Blenheim Park, following the line most of the way to the Column of Victory and crossed by the Oxfordshire Way, following the course of the Roman road Akeman Street (190239 is a little to the west of this junction).
